SOCCER player Bakier Salie, who is heading to participate in an international youth soccer tournament in Denmark, was honoured for his sporting skills.

He was the recipient of the Rotary Club of Uitenhage’s Youth Merit Award for his outstanding soccer performance.

Outgoing president of the Rotary Club of Uitenhage, Rynhardt Fourie said, “From an early age, Bakier showed immense potential in this sport and dedication to perfect his skills.

“Coaches have described him as a ‘mini Messi’. If the ball is passed his way, he will make something happen.”

At age 11, his skill prompted newspapers to send a friendly warning to Christiano Ronaldo, as Salie was identified as the new kid on the block and one of the future names to look out for. He has also spent time overseas training with the best and was chosen to participate in the prestige Dana Cup, which kicks off in Denmark on July 22nd.

This youth tournament is marked as one of the largest on the international soccer calender.

“Scouts from famous clubs such as Manchester United and Barcelona will be present. We trust that Bakier will be noticed and recruited.”

The Rotary’s Youth Merit Award was initiated in 1970 and is awarded to young performers who have brought honour to Uitenhage.

“Through his soccer achievements, Salie has brought tremendous honour to Uitenhage,” said Fourie.
