MORE than 100 “cute little trees” will be on display at the annual Bonsai Show which will be held this weekend at the Sherwood Garden Centre.
They are trees and not pot plants and can be hundreds of years old.
Unlike overseas, South African bonsai trees are grown outside to enable them to get their normal requirements from nature … sun, wind and rain.
In South Africa bonsai trees are mostly indigenous and we have a wide variety of beautiful trees like wild olive, boabab and spekboom, which are the envy of growers world wide. Visitors to the bonsai show will be fortunate to view a small Ginkgo Biloba tree.
These trees have existed since the prehistoric times.
Locally the youngest bonsai enthusiast is 11 years of age whilst the oldest is 80.
The public are invited to visit this year’s bonsai show on Saturday (09:00-17:00) and Sunday (09:00-16:00), to view displays, demonstrations and all the other bonsai related activities.
