THE Eastern Cape Provincial Geographical Names Committee (ECPGNC) has finalised and approved dates for the public hearing process regarding the name changes of Port Elizabeth, PE Airport and Uitenhage.
The proposed names for Uitenhage are:
.Garden Town
.Kariega
.Tolofiyeni
.Kamesh
The proposed name changes for Port Elizabeth are: .Gqebera .I-Bhayi .Nelson Mandela City.
The proposed names for Port Elizabeth International airport: .Nelson Mandela Bay Airport .Nelson Mandela Airport .Raymond Mhlaba Airport .Sipho Hashe International Airport .David Stuurman International Airport .The Khoi-San International Airport.
These names will be changed and the public are invited to have their say. The Uitenhage name change meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 6th, 18:00 at the Uitenhage Town Hall.
The UD Express reported in 2016 that the Eastern Cape government announced that it was considering changing Uitenhage’s name to “Qhagqiwa” or “Garden Town”. Since then “Qhagqiwa” has been removed from the list and replaced by Kariega, Kamesh and Tolo- fiyeni, which means Prickly Pear.
