THE South African Police Service has noted with great concern the recent spike in video clips on various social media platforms which have depicted cases of child kidnappings and abduction.
The police have, since these postings started going viral, been trying to confirm whether those depictions did or did not occur in any part of South Africa
Acting Uitenhage Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ronald Koll said none of these incidents have been reported to the police.
An urgent appeal is made to residents of Uitenhage and surrounding areas to stop posting unfounded and unconfirmed information on social media as it is causing panic and instilling unnecessary fear in the community.
“An appeal is made to any person who may provide details on these incidents to report them to the police so that the matters can be investigated. At the moment these posts are merely perceptions that are creating fear and panic in the community,” said Brigadier Koll.
“There is a lot of unconfirmed information circulating about the kidnapping of children, and we as the South African Police Service acknowledge your fear as parents.
“We do need to understand and accept that children are vulnerable and as parents and guardians we have a responsibility to ensure their safety,” said Brigadier Koll.
To this day, there is no evidence that suggests firstly, that these incidents happened in South Africa and secondly, that these incidents are actually legitimate.
- The public are urged to notify the police immediately if they have any information regarding any criminal activity.
