SHORT movies have through the ages become known as a powerful medium for propaganda, education, or simply to get across an idea or message.
Nowadays, with cellphone technology and You Tube, movie making has become part of communities, enhancing local cultural life through locally shot short movies.
“It is a form of communication in which you can choose to get the message across through different genres. Some will be serious and others more fun like a comedy,” said Evangelos Fantelas, a local actor, rapper, musician, screenwriter, movie-man and cook.
With his Fan of Ellas Productions, he focuses on social issues in and around Uitenhage, the first being the use of cannabis since the Constitutional Court at the end of last year ruled that the private use of it is now legal.
According to Michél Meyer, a musician and actor in Fan of Ellas Productions’ short movies, their aim is to get the message across in a fun way to prevent bad things.
“The message we wanted to get across with the cannabis movie, was that although it is legal and many are excited about the Court’s decision, you still have to respect others,” said Meyer.
After loading it on You Tube, the short movie within the first few hours registered more than 400 views.
Fantelas said through their locally shot short movies they wish to contribute to the community in a positive and different way.
“Not only is it entertainment, but we also scout for local talent and want to give them the opportunity to perform in our short movies. Even local businesses benefit as they feature in our movies,” said Fantelas.
“I also want to test myself as a movie maker and create stories with a heartfelt touching drama feel to it.”
Fantelas said he has a long list of social awareness topics, but the next short movies will focus on internet relationships, bullies and the struggles of homeless people.
“You can meet a beautiful girl on Facebook, but it is not to say that the profile is the real person. Internet dating is risky and can be dangerous. With regard to bullies, they are not only at school, but they are also among adults, at offices and on roads.”
In shooting the movies, Fantelas uses only his cellphone. Even the sound effects are pre-recorded with his cellphone.
“I am passionate about these short movies and want people to be entertained, to watch them and relate to them,” said Fantelas.
