EIGHT schools in Uitenhage were the lucky winners of the Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition, each receiving a building material voucher to the value of R15 000 at the official refurbished Cashbuild Uitenhage store opening ceremony.
General repairs and classroom upgrades were some of the plans for which the school principals have suggested they will use their Cashbuild vouchers.
Caritas Primary School, James Ndulula Primary School and Magqabi Primary School were three of the eight schools that each received a Cashbuild building material voucher to the value of R15 000.
A very happy Mr Meyes from Caritas Primary School is excited to be able to finally paint and upgrade some of the classrooms for the learners.
“These children have worked so hard for this competition and we are so happy to be able to reward them with brand new classrooms,” said Meyes.
James Ndulula Primary School’s deputy principal, Ms L Bonani, was over the moon at the news of her school being selected as winners.
“It has been such a long time since we have been able to do anything for the school so this voucher has come at the best time. We plan on making upgrades for the classrooms as well as putting in better windows, and in order to keep the children’s learning material safe,” said Bonani.
Mr Hoho, the principal of Magqabi Primary School, was also delighted and very proud of his learners. He said, “Most of the classrooms in the school don’t have any doors, so our first plan is to erect doors to the classrooms which will allow our learners to have quieter lessons as there will be less noise coming from other rooms.”
At the official refurbished Cashbuild store opening ceremony, when the building material vouchers totalling R120 000 were handed out to the eight winning schools, the children entertained everyone with singing, cultural dances and theatrical performances.
The Cashbuild Art-at-Heart competition entails learners from each school submitting their best artwork to Cashbuild. This artwork is displayed at the ceremony, and remains on display in the Cashbuild store for the next six years.
Artwork was judged and three winners from each school were named. Winners received Cashbuild Art-at-Heart gold, silver and bronze certificates for first, second and third place respectively. The Manager’s Choice award was judged and presented to a learner from Innes Primary School who was the overall winner of the artwork competition. This award was announced on the day and the winner received a stationery pack and a glass trophy.
The winner was also given the honour of officially opening the refurbished store.
The primary schools that benefitted from the Cashbuild Art-at-Heart donations were: Caritas, Handhaaf, Innes, James Ndulula, Magqabi, Phindubuye, Susannah Fourie and Winterberg.
