THE Rotary club of Uitenhage South inducted a new President at a gala dinner held last Saturday evening.
The retiring president Leo Doria gave his SOCA (state of the club address), recounting many successes and memories from his year in office. He said he was proud to hand over the helm of a club which was in fine form and ready to face the future.
The incoming president Hemant Nathoo accepted the chain of office and introduced his new board.
He then went on to tell the gathered guests of his plans in the coming year, which included continuing with many existing projects, but introducing a few new ones.
Some would be on the fundraising side to accommodate the increased commitment he wanted to offer to the poorer parts of the community of Uitenhage.
Blankets and warm clothing needed
The first project of Nathoo’s year of president, is a repeat from previous years which has proven to be so successful. The Winter Nights project will be held outside the OK store in Cuyler Street on Friday, July 12th.
This is the occasion where the public are requested to bring any blankets or excess warm clothing they may have, or cash to sponsor inexpensive blankets which the Rotary club sourced at R60 each.
As in previous years, everything collected will be donated (together with lots of hot soup and bread) in an informal settlement in Uitenhage on Mandela Day 18th July.
Last year the generosity of the public and in particular the Victory Riders Motorbike Club enabled the Rotary Club of Uitenhage South to give warm clothing to scores of children and to ensure that at least one blanket was given to each and every family in the Lapland settlement.
