THE Nelson Mandela Bay Athletics South Africa 21.1km Championships, which incorporate the CAA Southern Region Championships, will take place on Saturday, July 28, with a racing prize purse and lucky draw prizes worth R850 000!
The Eastern Province Athletics president, Selby Thabethe, said the local committee was proud to host this prestigious event on the road running calendar since 2014.
“With the support of our title sponsors, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, and our mother body, Athletics South Africa, we aim to continue to grow road-running and to honour Nelson Mandela’s 100th celebration in July with our established event,” said Thabethe.
With R700 000 for the elite field to compete for, Mike Mbambani, Eastern Province Athletics Sponsorship Liaison, said South Africa’s top athletes had already confirmed their participation.
The NMB ASA 21.1km Championships have grown in response to the needs of the running community. “There’s been a generous increase in prize money with the overall winner taking home R80 000,” said race director Alan Taylor.
“In addition, this year ASA have introduced a bonus incentive of R25 000, should a South African athlete finish first, boosting the winning purse to R105 000.”
Last year’s event saw outstanding results, with Eastern Cape favourites Melikhaya Frans finishing in fourth place and Ntombesintu Mfunzi in 10th position.
