AN on-site office for past pupils and teachers of Uitenhage High School was officially opened at the school.

8 July 2019 will forever be etched in the history of Uitenhage High as the day when the Uitenhage High Past Pupils and Teachers’ Association (UHPPTA) opened its on-site office and appointed its first communications manager, former learner Taahirah Lillah.

According to Mark Williams, principal at Uitenhage High, the Alumni Association was largely inspired by the memory of the school’s first principal, Mr HCC Hendricks.

“UHPPTA was started in 2010 with the vision of former learners contributing meaningfully towards the advancement of its alma mater by donating their time, energy and other resources to improve the lives of everyone connected to the school,” said Williams.

Through the sacrifices of the committed and passionate UHPPTA members, several projects were successfully concluded. These include the Buy-a-bench project, expansion of learner and educator ablution facilities and restoration of the school’s garden.

“Thus far, UHPPTA has sponsored current and former learners to the tune of more than R400 000 through scholarships and bursaries and this remains an on-going project.

“More recently, UHPPTA donated R100 000 towards the school’s classroom building project. Its flagship project remains the building of a school hall on the premises in the foreseeable future,” said Williams.

In celebrating the opening of this office and the appointment of its first communications manager, the executive committee and broader membership would like to pay homage to those visionaries who started this life-changing organisation.

“This joyous occasion is also a tribute to all those selfless donors who gave so generously over all these years, as well as those patrons who always support the UHPPTA fund-raisers,” said Williams.

Upcoming UHPPTA events:

•A Dance on 26 July

•Gala Event on 28 September

•High Tea on 2 November

•Bring and Braai on 23 November

  • Past pupils and teachers are urged to join the organisation and to make a regular pledge, be it monetary or otherwise. Please contact Ms Lillah at 063 059 7067 for more information. -REPORTER
