IF you owns an older vehicle, do not leave it unlocked or in a driveway. Theft of these vehicles is on the increase in Uitenhage.
The police in Uitenhage requests the community to be more vigilant and to assist them in their fight against crime in an attempt to curb the increase in theft of motor vehicles in their policing area.
“An increase in reports has been detected, especially in relation to the older type of motor vehicles,” said police spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart.
“Vehicle owners are requested to double check and ensure that their vehicles are actually properly locked before they walk away from them.”
According to Captain Swart, vehicles are stolen at different times, in different areas and on different days. Some of the stolen vehicles include the following models and makes: Isuzu 4 x 4 bakkie (2015), Toyota Corolla (1990/1991), Mazda Rustler/323 (1999), Nissan Sentra/Bakkie (2001), Uno Fiat (2001), Opel Corsa and Opel Kadett (1991). The value of the vehicles varies between R6 000 and R50 000.
The police also have the following safety hints:
.Do not leave your vehicle unlocked when you are away from it, even for only a short period.
.Make sure all windows and doors are secured before leaving the vehicle.
.Take your valuables with you when you park your vehicle. This includes large amounts of cash and bank cards.
.Park your vehicle in the garage and do not leave it in the drive way or in front of
your home.
.Fit an alarm and or anti-theft device in your car.
Be on the lookout for someone who is acting suspiciously or vehicles driving around suspiciously in your neighbourhood.
