HAVE you noticed the increase in large cargo ships in Algoa Bay? It is because the bay now functions as a ship-to-ship petrol station at sea.
The next Know Your Bay public event will focus on ship-to-ship bunkering in Algoa Bay and the spill risks of these operations.
Ship-to-ship bunkering operations are the equivalent of petrol stations at sea for large cargo ships.
Captain Neville Noble, from the South African Maritime Safety Authority will describe the operations of these activities currently taking place in Algoa Bay.
At present, two companies are licensed to conduct these operations, but two additional applications are being considered for licensing. The public will also be informed briefly about some of the risks and potential consequences of oil spills in Algoa Bay and the effect on marine life and local economy.
