FINALLY, after a four year battle against vandals, the 61 children and property of Mickey Mouse in Gerald Smith, Uitenhage, will now be safe with the completion of a fence to secure the crèche.
The property, which this year celebrates its 29th year, has been the victim of ongoing vandalism since 2014.
“The crèche belongs to those whose children are schooled here and school fees are minimal. We simply do not have the funds to keep on fixing what vandals stole. Up to now it has cost us thousands of rands to fix the fence, money that should have been invested in the education of our children,” said Lagenay Theron, manager at Mickey Mouse crèche.
A buy-a-brick project was launched to replace the wire fence with vibracrete, but the project was not supported well enough. Theron then during 2015 applied to the National Lottery for proper fencing, but her application was declined.
“Out of the blue I last year received a call from the National Lottery to say they have reviewed our application and that it was successful. The funds, a total of R208 000 were allocated for the fencing,” said Theron.
According to her the contractor, MB Fencing & Civils, will re-use the old fence to secure the vegetable garden which situates on the premises.
According to Morné Borman from MB Fencing & Civils, the total measurement of the fence is 180 metres and it is fitted with razor wiring to further secure the school.
Mickey Mouse school building is secured and equipped with an alarm system, electric gates and a circular closed television to monitor the property.
- In raising funds for Mickey Mouse its annual debutante ball will be held on September 28th and a Family Day will be held at the school on Saturday, November 10th.
