Local powerlifting girls are strong competition

FEMALE powerlifters from Despatch and Uitenhage proved to be the strongest at the recently held interschools competition which was part of the Eastern Cape Equipped Powerlifting championship at Newton Tech High School.


FEMALE powerlifters from Despatch and Uitenhage proved to be the strongest at the recently held interschools competition which was part of the Eastern Cape Equipped Powerlifting championship at Newton Tech High School.

The female team of Brandwag High School were the winners with Despatch High as runners-up. In the men’s category Cape Recife won with Newton Tech as runners-up and Pearson High in third position.

According to Jacqueline Harding from EC Equipped Powerlifting, “a whole lot of lifters broke Eastern Cape records. Some of these new record holders competed for the first time.”

Anika Ferreira from Brandwag High School was an outstanding performer and is the youngest member included in the Eastern Cape Equipped Powerlifting team. Schools mate Cayla Colling is also included in the team. The EC team will compete in the South African Equipped Powerlifting championship which will be held in Potchefstroom on 29 & 30 June.

The results of local powerlifting participants are as follow:

Development females: Li-Ami van Loggenberg (Brandwag) won the sub junior 57kg division; Anika Ferreira (Brandwag) won the sub junior 63kg division; Danielle du Piesanie (Brandwag) won the sub junior 72kg division; Zylmari du Preez (Brandwag) came 2nd in the sub junior 63kg division and Michaele Eyre (Despatch High) came 2nd in the 72kg division.

Senior females: Cayla Colling (Brandwag) won the sub junior 57kg division.

Bench press (males): Jarrod-Lee Barnard from Brandwag won the sub junior 120kg division.

The next local powerlifting competitions will be on July 28th and October 1st. The South African Bench Press championship for 2019 will be hosted in Nelson Mandela Bay. – HEILIE COMBRINCK
