SOCIETY needs more righteous heroes. Game-changing people who will stand up for what is right in order to better communities.

The characteristics of a hero need to be instilled in a person from a young age. Therefore a total of 200 possible heroes last week attended an interdenominational holiday club themed “Hero Central”, which was held in Uitenhage at Elim Church.

Aphiwe Zinto (20) a former Uitenhage & Despatch Junior Town Council Mayor whilst at Muir College, nowadays a B.Ed. student at NMU, is the chairperson of the Club.

“Children were taught specific characteristics God’s heroes had and the purpose of the Holiday Club was discovering and activating these characteristics within the children. These characteristics include Pure Heart, Hope, Power, Wisdom and Courage.”

According to Melanie Pillay, marketer of the Elim Holiday Club said, there was a 100% growth in attendance compared to the 2018 event and they are already looking forward to the 2020 event.

The Elim Holiday Club is being hosted annually for Grade 2 – 7 learners and registration and attendance is free of charge. It was the third consecutive year that the club was hosted and attendance each year escalates.

Arden Elie from Superkids at Elim of which the Holiday Club is an initiative said, “Children are our passion and it is a privilege to have this platform to impact their lives in such a meaningful way.”

Pastor Haydon Ownhouse from Elim Church said, “Our deepest prayer is that the seeds planted in these children in a very short time will be fostered and nurtured. May these children become the real heroes we need!”

Zinto thanked Jonathan Najoe, Olivia Gardner, Isaac Pinto, Desiree Steyn and Grant Williams for willingly volunteering to train the group leaders in preparation for the programme.

“From the bottom of our hearts we would also like to thank the parents who brought their children to Holiday Club.

“Thank you to all our sponsors and volunteers, from the small group of leaders to the catering team and planning committee,” said Zinto. –
