THE first Humpback Whales have been spotted in Algoa Bay on their migration route from Antarctica to East Africa!
In celebrating the arrival of the ocean’s giants in Algoa Bay, a welcoming the whales festival will be held at Pine Lodge on Saturday, June 16th.
Festivities start at 09:00 with an opening talk from Mayor Athol Trollip, followed by Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism CEO, Mandlakasi Skefile. Then there will be a brief presentation on Algoa Bay as a Hope Spot by Dr Lorien Pichegru, whilst Lloyd Edwards from Raggy Charters will be talking about the Humpback Whale migration and the Whales of Algoa Bay.
There will be displays all day long by Bayworld, the Institute of Coastal and Marine Research, SANCCOB and many others.
Volunteers will also offer free guided intertidal walks and guided tree walks, on the way to the beautiful vantage point of the old fort, where we will be whale-watching from the land.
At Pine Lodge, there will be marine arts and crafts for sale, whale art in the making, a drawing competition for kids, jumping castles and refreshments. Admission to the festival is free, and it is kid friendly!
