RESIDENTS from the drought stricken Eastern Cape and Nelson Mandela Bay held their breaths over the weekend and on Monday with promising clouds bringing much needed rain.

According to Garth Samp-son from the South African Weather Service in Port Elizabeth, there was not much rain in the catchment areas, but enough to lift the Churchill Dam back up to 100% of capacity.

“The largest of Nelson Mandela Bay’s main supply dams, the Kouga Dam, currently sits at 49.08%, the Impofu at 30.98% and the Groendal outside Uitenhage at 57.90%,” said Sampson.

The total combined capacity of the Metro’s main supply dams is currently at 48.97% of total combined capacity.

Over the weekend and on Monday, Uitenhage received a total of 36 mm of rain; Addo 4mm; Port Elizabeth Airport 37.4mm; St Albans 22.6mm and Swartkops 23.5mm.
