STRELITZIA High School celebrates its fif-tieth anniversary this year and festive activities will commence this weekend.

Half a century is the milestone many aspire to. The festivities will commence tomorrow (Friday, 25th May) with an assembly where guest speaker Luvuyo Ngxiki or affectionately known as “Vovo” will address the learners, staff and guests. Ngxiki, a managing member of iiNkumbuzo Photography, is a former learner of Strelitzia.

On Saturday (26th May) a special reunion spitbraai with past pupils and staff members will be held at the school hall. Many more activities will take place during the course of the year in celebration of Strelitzia’s rich history.

During 1968 the commercial department of the Uitenhage Technical College became an independent Commercial High School with 109 learners, 7 teachers and Mr JC Nel as principal. The school’s name was changed to Strelitzia High School during 1989 and the school changed to a Model C school during 1992.

Strelitzia High School is famous for its choir, mastrimbas, various cultural societies and sport codes which all have an array of prizes to show.

The school is currently under the leadership and guidance of principal Omar Nielsen.
