Blanket challenge to ‘drive’ cold away

Unfortunately not all are fortunate to enjoy those luxuries. The skimpily dressed homeless people of Uitenhage and Despatch have no choice other than to face the winter cold without what most take for granted.

At Automark Uitenhage, four staff members are driving a campaign, collecting blankets and clothing, in an effort to help those left to sleep under the stars. This is in line with Toyota South Africa’s Knights philosophy to set an example of being balanced professionals in their working environments, community, social and environmental activities.

Dewald Oelofse from Automark at Toyota Uitenhage said, “What is different this year is that we have identified fellow businesspersons and now challenge them also to donate blankets towards our project.”

The local businesses challenged to donate blankets include: Auto Works (Johan “Vingers” Jonker), EME Systems (Tony Erasmus), Chris Auto Body Works (Chris Botha), Crack Logic (Ugen Singh), Auto Trimmers (David Lumley), Speed-O-Rama (Nico Klue) and Henk’s Car Wash (Henk Hurter).

“All blankets received we hand-out personally by driving through the streets late at night, looking for the homeless and then handing them the blankets. It is an emotional experience and makes you realize how blessed you are to go back to the comfort of your home,” said Oelofse.

The public is also challenged please to support this project by donating blankets. They can be delivered at Automark or at any of the above “challenged” businesses.

Oelofse is joined in this initiative by colleagues Conrad van Rooyen, André Alberts, Monique Gerber and Eben van Rooyen.
